About Hypnosis & Hypnotherapy
What is hypnosis?
Hypnosis is generally thought to be a different frame of mind, a different kind of awareness, from normal waking life; perhaps akin in some way to dreaming sleep. This is not true. Hypnotic states and experiences are, in fact, commonplace in ordinary life and often occur without us realising that they are happening.
For example; most car drivers experience periods of ‘auto-pilot mode’. While driving down a familiar road you may ‘come to’ quite suddenly and realise that you have travelled several miles without memory of having done so. During that period you drove normally, with due attention to road conditions, other traffic and so on, apparently without any conscious attention or control. This happens a lot, to many of us. This shows that we can carry out skilled tasks, tasks requiring choices and decisions, even when our mind seems to have been concentrating elsewhere.
Is this what happens in a hypnotherapy session?
A hypnotherapy session is very similar to being in this natural hypnosis state. You may be aware of everything the therapist says during the session. Many people think that they are not hypnotised if they remember everything, or if they can talk. You will be in a light hypnotic state, called the Alpha state. In this state your mind is slowed down, you are relaxed and you are focused on one task. You are not asleep and can, therefore, hear and communicate quite coherently.
Hypnotherapy is well respected as it has been scientifically researched, and as a result is becoming widely accepted as a main stream therapeutic practice. It is hugely effective and can often bring about positive changes in both thoughts and behaviour in a relatively short period of time.
So how does hypnotherapy actually work?
In a light hypnotic state, called the Alpha state, we are able to talk directly to your subconscious mind. We make positive suggestions to you to help you reach specific goals, and because it is your subconscious mind we're talking to these suggestions tend to 'stick'. These goals can be anything: losing weight, giving up smoking, pain relief etc.
How many sessions do you need?
How many sessions you need to be free from your issue depends on you.
If you really do want to Stop Smoking, for example, then one session of hypnotherapy could be all that you need.
For all other issues, including Weight Management and Freedom from Anger, Anxiety, Depression, Fears and Phobias, Limiting Beliefs, Stress and much more, then a minimum of three sessions is required.
You will decide when you have reached your goals. It could be after three sessions, it could be after seven. Just like a nurse wouldn't leave a job half done, for example send someone home with a half-dressed wound and say ‘don't worry, you'll be fine now’, I wouldn't leave your therapy half done. I aim to offer more value than you've ever experienced before in your life.
To increase the chance of success I also supply a CD with your own unique hypnosis session on it. It is professionally recorded with my voice and with the same background music used in the 'live' session. You can use this at any time to re-enforce the positive hypnotic messages during any suitable relaxation periods.

Can everyone be hypnotised?
You do not need to worry about not being able to be hypnotised. Everyone can enter into a hypnotic state, it is a natural state to be in, something we fall into many times a day. Some people do go into deeper states called Theta and Delta, but this is not necessary for most needs.
Is it safe?
An important point to make is that you are in control of the entire procedure. You are always in the driving seat, able to react and make decisions during each session. Just as in a day-dream, you can extract yourself from the hypnotic state instantaneously. If you experience any problems you can simply end the session by counting in your mind “one, two, three” and you will come out of hypnosis.
Do you fall asleep?
You do not need to worry about falling asleep. If you do fall asleep you will not go so deep that you cannot wake up. Even when you are asleep your ears are still picking up sounds and your brain is dealing with that information. Your subconscious mind is recording, analysis and dealing with it. An example of this is a mother with a child. She can be asleep, and even dreaming, but will wake instantly she hears her baby cry.
Hypnosis is a natural state to be in, where you are in control and where we can change our behaviours for our good. You will be able to hear and converse with your therapist, and you will very likely be able to remember the whole session.
